It's a family business, that is why he became a funeral director
(and later became President of the Funeral Homes). 

Why? Very lucrative. But you are right, what
a waste. 

And the politics acts as a feeder
to the funeral business. Same reason lawyers,
realtors, etc. become politicians. 
...And also join every organization they can.
