The way of apportioning costs between ICANN and the DNSO has historically
not been that DNSO pays the marginal cost (the cost of doing an additional
day of webcasting beyond the two days of main ICANN meetings) but rather
based on a somewhat-discounted sense of average cost. That is, in the past,
the DNSO has agreed to pay a share of total webcasting cost proportional to
the amount of webcasting time it uses.

With, in general, three days of webcasting, one of which is of DNSO
meetings, the DNSO takes about a third of meeting technology costs. (Note
that meeting technology costs include not just webcasting but expenses the
DNSO may feel obliged to continue -- microphone and video projector rental,
for example.) All told, such expenses generally total about $32000 per
meeting, and in the past, I recall that the DNSO has been asked to pay
between $7000 and $9000.

My sense is that costs are likely to be similar in Yokohama and that the
DNSO's share of costs would then be about $7000-$9000 as usual. Note,
however, that negotiations re cost allocation are properly addressed to
Andrew, ICANN's CFO, rather than to me.

I haven't yet heard from local organizers one way or the other about the
availability of the main room on July 12, but if it (or the high-speed
Internet access and other facilities we need to webcast) were not available
then, the webcast would be impossible even if funding were obtained.
