RE: [registrars] Fw: Renewal Scams

Ross,
We don't know where they get data from.
I was misinformed on the maple leaf thing I guess.
And I'm now wondering about the rest
were they a Tucows reseller at one time?

Where are they getting their mailing list data from? I have a cardboard box
with about 100 "renewal notices" sitting under my desk for names that were
never with Enom or DROC - presumably, they might have a bulk whois license
with someone, but whom?

The notices this side of the border were from the Canadian Competition
Bureau and the RCMP (sort of like our FBI) - one of these notices can be
found here http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/scams/bfraud.htm outlining what they
characterized as "a warning to Canadian consumers and businesses that own
internet domain names to take caution before paying what appear to be
invoices from the "Internet Registry of Canada" for the registration or
re-registration of their domain names." - it didn't have a lot to do with
the maple leaf other than the one they used is also used by the Canadian
government for official correspondence. I think that these same companies
were behind the EDNM scam from last year that was subject to the FTC
investigation (details here:
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2001/02/morgenstern.htm) - could be wrong on that
though.
