I've seen and even helped generate countless of these
slicings and dicings in both the telecom and Internet
worlds over the past 25 years.

The only consistent, meaningful correlation with any
externality is GNP/GDP as modified by robustness of
the related marketplace.  Doesn't matter wether it's
hosts, telephones, TV sets, or widgets.
