I really hate to break this to you Paul.  But Namespace was far from the first
to do something like this.   And since the SRS began, there have been a slew of
these things popping up.  The one I like (and have used in some code of my own,
gotta love GPL software) is at http://www.bw.org/whois/

The geektools proxy has also done this for quite a long time, long before the
NSI SRS was implemented.  And they weren't the first either.  I think even
Richard Sexton's whois client has this capability.
