Why couldn't you treat the internet like a country, when people/companies register a name it would be considered a trade mark on the internet. When registering a trade mark(Domain Name) you have to search to see if someone else owns it or not. There are so many different ways of registering products and services. There are still many names that have been bought over the years that are no longer online or not in use, that could be bought. At this point in time adding more TLD's would cause more confusion to the public. It is easier to remember a Web site with a name like ReserveYourStay.com, then to have a shorter version YourStay.com/.net/.org.ca.UK.web......confusion would be caused by too many different TLD's. By leaving the net alone for a few years more and more of the names will get taken up and used.
