[registrars] Network Solutions Announces Extension of Testbed Period

Network Solutions Announces Extension of Testbed Period

Program for new registrars progresses

Herndon, Va., June 25, 1999 - Network Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSOL) today
announced the extension of the Shared Registration System (SRS) testbed
period through July 16, 1999 under an agreement with the U.S. Department of
Commerce. The three-week extension will provide for further operational
testing by the five testbed registrars selected to offer registration
services in the .com, .net and .org top level domains.

To date, four of the five testbed registrars have all achieved SRS technical
certification and have the capability to access NSI's registry for real time
domain name registrations in .com, .net and .org. One of the five registrars
has successfully completed registrations since June 7. The five registrars
were named on April 21, to be part of a testbed period. Each of the five
testbed registrars has an assigned Network Solutions account representative
and technical team that provides around-the-clock access.

"This extension has been expected for some time, anticipating that it would
take a registrar at least 60 to 90 days to develop, test and implement its
end of the registration system after being accredited," said David H.
Holtzman, chief technology officer, Network Solutions. "The security,
stability and robustness, which are critical to the ultimate success of
competitive registrations in the domain name system and competitive
registrations, need to be assured in a multi-registrar environment."

Each new registrar is required to build its own registration system and is
responsible for its own pricing, customer service and liability for domain
name registrations. This is an initial phase in the evolution of competition
among registrars and all open Internet registries for registration services
as envisioned in the June 1998 "White Paper" (Management of Internet Names
and Addresses) issued by the U.S. Government.
