One obvious way would be to join or donate to EFF.

There are several other organisations with overlapping goals,
which might suit your tastes or priorities better. Two that
I can think of are:

www.gilc.org
wwwcpsr.org

No doubt there are several others.

If elections aren't practical (I'm not convinced, but there's
certainly an argument they aren't), then giving organisations
like this board seats as plausible representatives of the
public might make more sense than going to gov'ts.
