Hi Paul,
It is my interpretation of The proposal for Membership Criteria posted
earlier (http://www.dnso.org/wgroups/wg-review/Arc02/msg00819.html) that
sole traders would be allowed to join IDNH unless specifically excluded
(which this proposal does not do), hence I am now seeking clarification from
the BC as to their position on this.

During our previous dialogue, it was certainly not my intention to give you
the impression that I am advocating a particular group of individuals are
included in IDNH (which I understand you support in principal) if they
already have the opportunity for representation elsewhere. So where does the
UK sole trader fit in?

Given that a sole trader cannot not join a Chamber of Commerce (which
represents only limited companies/ corporations) and I am not aware of any
other associations that represent sole traders, the only part of the BC's
charter that I have found that may be applicable is:-

b. Any legally recognized for-profit business enterprise that has been
delegated a domain, that uses the Internet to conduct for-profit business
and that has been in business for at least one year. >

If I am a sole trader, can I join the BC?

Before we all get carried away in support of a constituency for small
business (SMEs) I think I should point out that the existing Business
Constituency (BC) is currently representing SMEs.

The BC represents thousands of SMEs indirectly via its association
membership. The BC represents them directly with its explicit category for
SME membership - which charges a significantly reduced fee.

SME representation in the DNSO faces the same dilemma as SME representation
in public policy. SME's are typically too small to afford the time/money
commitment to participate in non-core activities. Representation via
industry associations is the typical solution.
