RE: [wg-d] Next step with WG Principles

All,

There has been much good discussion on this issue regarding working group
principles. This has resulted in many e-mails (which themselves have shown
why there needs to be some stricter ability to mandate how the working
groups are constructed, and how to ensure that listserve discussions are
constructive :-)). Therefore, I would like to ask Kent, Bret and Karl, if
they chose to accept the request, to summarize the 'essence' of the
discussion -- based on their two suggested approaches and any other
suggested approaches, and come up with one suggestion. The one suggestion
should point out and identify the main areas of the differences in views so
we can focus on trying to reach some sort of consensus on suggestions to
address those differences. Once this is done (and I'd suggest this occur
within the next 2-4 days (or adjust as schedules permit), and it be
circulated to the overall list for discussion.

The suggestion of having three try to summarize the essence of the
discussion is by no means an exclusionary group, but it's impossible to do
any summarizing of views on an e-mail listserve, so it's most constructive
for all, and best use of their time, if it's summarized and then commented
on as a basis for further 'flushing out'. I think the discussion on the WG
principles issue has reached its point of starting to diminish in quality,
and thereby any sort of resolutions. Once we have the suggested approach, we
can focus on flushing out any outstanding issues.

Since this debate is central to the overall functioning of this working
group/committee, it's my view that we should first resolve these principles,
then break up into the two subgroups, and continue forward with the
remaining outstanding issues.
