The benefit is stability, William. The more root networks out there, the
less chance that there

Also, regional roots can offer local TLDs that are not available in other
areas of the world.

More root servers, scattered in more places means that less network
bandwidth is taken
up by DNS queries. User response time is faster since they are able to hit
local roots rather
than one that may be many hops away.
