Correction: In fact we were told that VRSN refused to countenance an
extension, or changes.  As far as I know, VRSN still refuses to
contenance an extension; but they agreed at the last minute some changes
which it hoped would sweeten the deal (which is it's right as an
independent actor in all this).  ICANN jumped at the opportunity to
wring a few more concessions.
